Despite the problems, Land Rover is celebrating 30 years of Discovery

Life goes on at Land Rover, the profitable arm of the West Midlands-based JLR combine, highlights Iain Robertson, as the company rolls out a 400-off run of special editions to mark the 30th anniversary of the company’s finest off-roader.

Based on the Discovery Sd6 SE, the ‘Anniversary Edition’ features 22.0-inch diameter alloy wheels, a fixed panoramic glass sunroof, privacy glass, a 380W Meridian sound system and a choice of metallic paint as part of the package. A total of 400 Anniversary Editions will be available in a choice of Santorini Black, Corris Grey, Loire Blue, or Indus Silver body colours.

Rawdon Glover, Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover UK, said: “The Discovery family represents our pinnacle of versatility and we are immensely proud to celebrate its phenomenal lineage. Discovery has evolved in its 30-year history to bring technology, capability and relevance consistently to the ever-changing motoring community. We have added extra value for our customers with the 30th Anniversary Edition, making what is regarded by publications, like Autocar and What Car?, as the ‘Best Large SUV’ on sale today, even better.”

Since its original launch in 1989, the Land Rover Discovery has become a brand synonymous with adventure and exploration. Put to work in the most extreme of global locations, in its previous iterations, it proved time and time again that capability did not need to come at the sacrifice of comfort. As a result, the Discovery has become revered by customers around the world.

In 2015, the award-winning Discovery gained a sibling in the Discovery Sport model, which became Land Rover’s best-seller in global terms. Together, Discovery and Discovery Sport have become vital to the Land Rover family and have sold an outstanding 1.7m vehicles globally. The Disco Sport is a darling of the larger company car set.

Critically acclaimed, the Discovery family continues to be a strong favourite with experts too and has amassed over an excellent 300 awards to its name that never seem to cease being delivered. The current generation Discovery continues to add accolades to the trophy cabinet, more recently achieving top honours from The Sun, Auto Express, Carbuyer, 4x4 and Tow Car publications, as well as the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers.

In its previous forms, the Discovery was the tool of choice for renowned global explorers and has also been deployed widely for search and rescue, police and humanitarian initiatives in many of the world’s hot-spots. As we have reported before, a specially developed Discovery was commissioned recently as the Red Cross’s new emergency mobile command centre, designed to work with disaster response teams to help save lives.

The Anniversary Edition Discovery is priced at £59,995 (prior to discounting) and the company will be celebrating 30 years of Discovery throughout 2019.

MSG Summary

There is a large number of automotive anniversaries taking place this year, not least being 100 years of Citroen, but thanks to our affiliations with a number of both Armed Forces and Public Sector bodies, we are delighted to mark Land Rover’s celebrations for its eminently practical Discovery.
