Lexus goes the whole hog with latest RC F

Having enjoyed tremendous success with the motorsport-influenced version of its RC F coupe, reports Iain Robertson, Lexus has supplemented the new model line-up with a Track Edition that throws a cat among the performance pigeons.

Blending Lexus luxury and craftsmanship with performance ingredients normally the preserve of exotica, the latest evolution of its RC model features improved aerodynamics, reduced weight, retuned suspension and styling changes, all designed to whisk the coupe to a new level of performance and refinement. Be under zero illusion, it is fast, durable and highly capable, the range of changes both boosting performance and refreshing its appearance.

Reducing weight without compromise has led to hollow rear half-shafts, a pared-down intake manifold and a smaller air conditioning compressor to remove weight from the front of the car. Using aluminium for the toe control brackets and the upper suspension support brackets also reduces weight, while maintaining stiffness. Meanwhile, stiffer bushings have been introduced for the rear suspension arms and both steering rack and engine mounts.

The 5.0-litre, 32v, V8 powerhouse now has a maximum output of 451bhp and maximum torque of 383lbs ft at 4,800rpm. Driving an eight-speed automatic transmission, a higher final drive ratio (3.13 vs 2.93) improves off-the-line response. It is aided by electronic launch control that requires the driver to depress and hold the brake pedal, engage the system by pressing a button on the console, floor the accelerator to bring the engine up to speed and then release the brake, which results in a repeatable 0-60mph time of just 4.2s.

The headlights have been updated to a design featuring stacked LEDs and integrated daytime running lights. The shape of the signature spindle grille has been altered by adding a lower lip opening that stretches across the bottom. At the rear, new tail-lights are integrated into a reshaped bumper for a more chiselled appearance.

In Track Edition form, a precisely engineered set of upgrades work together seamlessly. The aero package incorporates a carbon-fibre front air dam and fixed rear wing. Weight reduction was key (by 70-80kgs). Every Track Edition model has Brembo carbon-ceramic brake discs and a set of lightweight 19-inch BBS forged alloy wheels. Additional weight was removed by specifying carbon fibre reinforced plastic for the roof and bonnet and a change to carbon fibre for the partition behind the rear seats and for bumper reinforcement. Further reductions come from a titanium exhaust silencer and tailpipes. Using titanium not only reduces weight, but also gives the Track Edition a polished look and an unique sound.

To create a more exclusive look in the cabin, the Track Edition is fitted as standard with a red leather interior, with Alcantara seat upholstery accents and red carbon trim on the doors and dashboard. The new model will be available in a choice of two exterior colours: Ultra White and Nebula Matt Grey, the latter exclusive to the Track Edition, when production commences in March. Prices will be announced nearer to the on-sale dates.

MSG Summary

The RC F has always been a special model for Lexus. In its latest form, it is even more refined for both road and track use. Lexus deserves its place in the upper echelons of high-quality transport, the ‘F’ designation provides an extra edge.
