Vauxhall launches its most important new Astra model

While the official details are still thin on the ground, Iain Robertson can reveal a PSA-led revolution for a car range that should not disappoint on any level, thanks to a raft of both shared and new technology to whisk the Astra to a secure future.

A vital element to which ALL carmakers ought to attend, with their latest models, is weight reduction and, when it is allied to dramatic aerodynamic efficiency, the combination is compelling. The new Astra cleaves through the air at 0.26Cd for the hatchback and an even cleaner 0.25Cd for the Sports Tourer (estate), which makes it the most slippery car in class. Its kerbweight has been whittled down by around eight per cent.

The result of this primary task ensures that the latest specification PSA Group petrol and diesel engines work more frugally, with official figures showing up to 64.2mpg for the former and 78.5mpg for the latter. In terms of potency, the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder engines range between 107 and 142bhp (a solitary 1.4-litre unit is also rated at 142bhp), developing torque figures that range from 143 to 174lbs ft. The 1.5-litre turbodiesel engines range from 102 to 119bhp (191 to 221lbs ft of pull).

The new line-up drives through a choice of six-speed manual and either a seven-speed Constantly Variable, or a brand-new nine-speed fully automatic transmissions. This latter unit is a real ground breaker for Vauxhall but makes it debut on the Astra, before extending coverage to the rest of the PSA model ranges. It is of the latest maximum efficiency and torque-enhanced class of gearboxes, designed to maximise Astra’s promised fuel efficiency. However, there are a few additional surprises yet to emerge for the new model, not the least of which is electrification.

The latest Astra is available with a new digital front camera that not only recognises vehicles, but also pedestrians and traffic sign recognition to be displayed as symbols on the dash display. A digital rear view camera, on selected models, works through the new infotainment system that has higher levels of connectivity and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optionally available is the E-Call emergency function providing extra assistance by depressing the red button. If the seatbelt tensioners or airbags are deployed, the system automatically makes an emergency call.

Comfort levels have been prioritised in the new Vauxhall. A practical feature is inductive charging of mobiles. A high-end Bose sound system, featured on some versions, transforms the new Astra into a concert hall. Seven loudspeakers, including a RichBass subwoofer below the boot floor, ensure optimum listening pleasure. Occupants are surrounded by a rich sound, regardless of where they are in the vehicle. In addition, up to eight different sound profiles can be stored via the digital amplifier.

Last but not least, the new Astra introduces a heated windscreen on selected models, making driving in the winter safer and more comfortable. Thin, almost invisible wires in the windscreen ensure that Astra drivers always have a clear view of the road on frosty days. As soon as we know more, you will be informed.

MSG Summary

The latest Astra is a landmark car for Vauxhall that features state-of-the-art technology, while retaining sensible proportions and superb accommodation.
